The Itinerary
Campbellton, at the Quebec border (Pointe-à-la-Croix is on the other side of the 1.2 km Van Horne Bridge), marks the confluence of the Restigouche River and Chaleur Bay. It's one of the world's finest Atlantic salmon sectors — Prince of Wales and U.S. presidents have fished here for 150 years.
Sugarloaf Provincial Park, at Campbellton's edge, is dominated by Sugarloaf Mountain — a 305 m extinct volcanic cone. Ski hill in winter (12 runs), skate park and mountain biking in summer. The summit trail (1.5 km, 45 minutes) offers panoramic views over Chaleur Bay, the Gaspé Peninsula and the Restigouche River.
The Restigouche River Experience Centre tells the story of salmon fishing — the king sport of East Coast elites. Tide Head's Salmon Inn restaurant serves Restigouche salmon in a century-old inn. 20 minutes away, Eel River Bar First Nation (Mi'gmaq) welcomes visitors at the Eel River Cultural Centre. The Van Horne Bridge — Canada's longest international bridge (1.2 km to Pointe-à-la-Croix QC) — is a walk worth taking.
