The Itinerary

Saint John, Canada's oldest incorporated city (1785), built by British Loyalists expelled from the United States after the American Revolution, is an often-overlooked Victorian architectural treasure. Uptown preserves one of Canada's largest collections of Victorian stone buildings — spared modern development by decades of economic stagnation.

The Reversing Falls Rapids at the mouth of the Saint John River are unique in the world: twice daily, the Fundy tide (8 m here) is so powerful it reverses the river's flow, creating rapids running upstream. The glass Skywalk (since 2017) suspends visitors above the hydraulic chaos. Jet-boat tours for the bold.

The Saint John City Market (1876) is Canada's oldest continuously operating covered market — wooden roof framing inverted like a ship's hull (work of a shipwright). The Loyalist Burial Ground (1784) at King's Square holds the founders' tombstones. The Trinity Royal Heritage Conservation District (300+ buildings) is one of North America's largest heritage neighbourhoods. 5 minutes on foot: the New Brunswick Museum, Canada's oldest public museum (1842).
