The Itinerary
35 km west of Fredericton, along the magnificent Saint John River valley, two complementary attractions bring New Brunswick's Loyalist history to life: Mactaquac Park and Kings Landing Historical Settlement.
Mactaquac Provincial Park, created when the hydroelectric dam was built in 1968 (96 km reservoir), offers 525 campsites, 18-hole golf, marina, beaches, trails and even a winter fat-bike trail — New Brunswick's largest provincial park. The Mactaquac Generating Station produces 12% of the province's electricity.
Kings Landing Historical Settlement, 15 minutes further, is a 120-hectare living museum with 70 authentic relocated buildings (school, forge, sawmill, farm, tavern, Sir Howard Douglas Loyalist manor). Over 100 costumed interpreters recreate daily life from British Loyalist arrival (after the 1783 American Revolution) through the 1900s. The "Visiting Cousins" program lets children spend a week in costume as 1820 children.
