The Itinerary

At the end of the Acadian Peninsula, two islands connected by bridges to the mainland — Lamèque and Miscou — offer a hop to the end of the world: peat bogs as far as the eye can see, a lighthouse at the island's tip, an international baroque festival and whale songs offshore.

From Shippagan (university, New Brunswick Marine Centre and Aquarium with seal shows), a bridge spans Le Goulet to Lamèque, the Acadian peat bog island par excellence — supplying 50% of North America's horticultural peat moss. The surprising Lamèque International Baroque Music Festival (July, in Sainte-Cécile church with exceptional acoustics) draws virtuosos from around the world.

A second bridge leads to Miscou, a 64 km² island. Route 113 heads straight north to Miscou Lighthouse — an 1856 octagonal wooden lighthouse, one of Canada's oldest still operational. From the top: 360° view over Chaleur Bay, the Atlantic, Northumberland Strait and — in clear weather — the Magdalen Islands. Note: Miscou Tea Room and Anse-aux-Lapins beach, wild and deserted.
