The Itinerary
Between the Acadian Peninsula to the north and Kouchibouguac to the south, the Acadian coast between Tracadie and Néguac is New Brunswick's most forgotten east-coast stretch — and that's precisely its charm. Small francophone villages, deserted beaches, Val-Comeau dunes, and the memory of Tracadie's lazaretto.
Tracadie-Sheila (16,000 inhabitants), the regional capital, hosts the Tracadie Historical Museum — telling a poignant and Canada-unique story: the Tracadie lazaretto (1849-1965), North America's only leprosy patient facility. The Hospitalières de Saint-Joseph nuns cared for 327 leprosy patients over 116 years. The museum displays moving artifacts, photos and documents.
Route 11 then 117 descend to Pokemouche, Brantville (Val-Comeau beaches, 8 km dunes), and Néguac (4,000 inhabitants). At Néguac, the French Fort Cove (1750) historic site marks an Acadian fishing post from before the Deportation. Offshore, Heron Island (ecological reserve). Saumarez public market (Saturday summer), Pizza Delight (chain born in NB), and the Carrefour de la Mer in Caraquet, 30 minutes away, are other essentials.
